Testimonial video questions that get real answers
The best testimonial video questions are open-ended and follow the customer’s story: what the problem was, why they chose you, what changed, and what they’d tell someone else. Ask one question at a time, ask for specifics, and let customers answer in their own words instead of reading a script.
These questions work for any testimonial video, from a quick social clip to a full customer story.

TL;DR
- Ask five to seven open questions that move from problem to result.
- One question per clip makes editing faster.
- Script the structure of the video. Let the customer choose the words.
- Keep the finished video short, and cut shorter clips for social.
What makes a good testimonial video question?
A good testimonial video question is open-ended, so it can’t be answered with yes or no. It’s about one thing and asks for a specific detail. It also invites the customer to repeat the question in their answer, for example “Before we worked together, I was…”, so each clip makes sense on its own.
Testimonial video questions to ask customers
Group your questions by the stage of the customer’s story. Pick a few from each group.
Questions about the problem
- What were you dealing with before you found us?
- What had you already tried, and why didn’t it work?
- What was the problem costing you in time or money?
- How did the problem affect your day or your team?
- What made you decide it was time to fix it?
Questions about the decision
- How did you first hear about us?
- What made you choose us over the other options?
- Did you have any doubts before you started? What were they?
- What finally made you say yes?
- What did you expect when you started?
Questions about the experience
- What was it like to work with us?
- What surprised you most?
- Which part do you use or value most?
- Can you describe a moment when we helped you out?
- How easy was it to get started?
Questions about the result
- What has changed since you started working with us?
- Can you put a number on it, like hours saved, jobs booked or sales made?
- What can you do now that you couldn’t do before?
- How do your customers or your team notice the difference?
- Where would you be if you hadn’t made the switch?
Questions for a recommendation
- Who would you recommend us to?
- What would you tell someone who is on the fence?
- How would you describe us to a friend in one sentence?
- What’s one reason to work with us that people might not expect?
Pick five to seven in total.
How to ask testimonial video questions so answers sound natural
- Send the questions ahead of time. Customers get time to think about their answers.
- Ask them to repeat the question in the answer. “What changed is…” works on its own in an edit.
- Ask for one story. A specific example gives viewers something concrete, where general praise doesn’t.
- Ask for an example. If an answer is vague, follow up with “Can you give me an example?”
- Record each question as its own clip. Separate takes are easier to trim and reorder.
With Biteable’s Record Request, you create a prompt and share a link, and the customer responds directly in Biteable, with no file transfers. Our guide on how to get video testimonials from customers covers who to ask and what to send with the link.
Testimonial video script template
A testimonial video script is an outline for the finished video. It sets the order of the clips. It is not a set of lines for the customer to read.
- Opening line: the result, in the customer’s own words.
- Name card: the customer’s name, business and role as on-screen text.
- The problem: a clip from the problem questions.
- The decision: why they chose you.
- The result: the change, with one specific detail.
- The recommendation: who they’d recommend you to, and why.
- Your CTA: a clickable CTA at the end of your shared Biteable video, with the URL and text you choose (see publishing).
What to say in a testimonial video
If a customer asks what to say, send them talking points instead of a script. Give them the five stages: the problem, the decision, the experience, the result and the recommendation. Ask them to speak to each one in their own words.
Employee testimonial video questions
Use these for recruiting videos. They’re adapted from the employee prompts in our post on Record Request ideas.
- What’s your favorite thing about working here?
- How would you describe our workplace culture?
- What would you tell someone thinking about joining our team?
- How have you learned and grown since you started?
- What three words sum up our workplace culture?
How long should a testimonial video be?
Keep each testimonial video to one customer story. If you have more good answers, cut them into extra short clips. Keep clips for social media shorter than the full story.

Testimonial video questions FAQ
How many questions should I ask in a testimonial video?
Ask five to seven questions. That’s enough to cover the problem, the decision, the result and a recommendation without tiring the customer out. Choose at least one question from each stage of the story, then cut to the best clips.
Should I give customers a script?
No. Give customers talking points instead, so the answers are in their own words. Send the questions ahead of time and the five story stages: problem, decision, experience, result and recommendation. Then let them answer in their own words.
What if a customer gives a vague answer?
Ask a follow-up for one specific example. “Can you tell me about a time that happened?” or “Can you put a number on that?” turns “They’re great” into a story a viewer can believe. If you’re collecting answers by link, put the follow-up in your prompt, for example “Please include one specific example.”
